The one-paragraph version
Drywall is panels screwed to framing and finished at the seams — faster and cheaper to install and repair. Plaster is troweled over lath in layers — harder, denser, quieter, and more expensive. Most homes built after the 1950s have drywall; many older Charles County homes have plaster.
Head to head
- Cost: Drywall wins, by a lot. Both to install and to repair.
- Speed: Drywall wins. A room in days, not weeks.
- Durability: Plaster wins. It is harder and resists dents better.
- Sound: Plaster wins. Its density deadens sound noticeably.
- Repair: Drywall wins. Patches are straightforward; plaster repair is a specialty.
- Fire resistance: Roughly even with the right board types.
- Look: Tie. Both finish smooth; plaster can take more ornamental detail.
If you have plaster now
Keep it if it is sound — it is a better wall than new drywall. Repair the cracks, skim-coat if you want it perfect. Only consider covering or replacing it when it is failing across large areas. We do plaster repair and we will tell you honestly which camp your walls fall in.
If you are building new
Drywall, almost always. The cost and speed difference is decisive, and modern drywall with good finishing looks excellent. Plaster in new construction is a luxury choice — beautiful, and priced like one.
