Why texture matching is the whole game
Here is a truth about drywall repair: the patch is the easy part. Anybody can cut a hole and screw in new board. What separates a repair you cannot find from one that catches your eye every time you walk past is the texture. A perfectly flat patch on an orange-peel wall might as well have a sign on it.
Around Waldorf, nearly every home has one of two textures: orange peel (fine, subtle bumps like the skin of an orange — the default in most newer builds) or knockdown (heavier splatter flattened with a trowel — common in St. Charles and White Plains). Older homes may have smooth walls. We match all three.
How matching actually works
Texture is sprayed on with a hopper gun — compressed air pushes thinned joint compound through a nozzle, and the air pressure, nozzle size, and compound thickness decide the pattern. Matching means dialing all three to reproduce your wall's exact look:
Orange peel: finer spray, higher pressure. The trick is keeping it subtle — too heavy and it reads as a different texture entirely.
Knockdown: heavier splatter, then flattened with a knockdown trowel after it sets slightly. The timing of the knockdown pass decides the final look — too early and it smears, too late and it will not flatten.
The blend: we spray past the edges of the repair onto the surrounding wall, fading the new texture into the old. A hard line where new texture stops is the tell of an amateur job.
The test that matters
We check every texture match with a work light held low and angled across the wall — the same raking light that will expose a bad match the first evening you turn on a lamp. If we can see the repair in raking light, it is not done. This check is part of every job, not an upgrade.
Whole-room re-texturing
Sometimes matching is not the right call. If a wall has three different textures from three different repairs over the years, or you are going from popcorn to knockdown, the clean move is re-texturing the whole surface. We skim the wall flat first, then spray the new texture wall-to-wall. One consistent finish, no patchwork.
A note on prices: every job needs different work, and material and labor costs move around. Treat any numbers here as starting points, not quotes. The written price we give you after our free visit is the real number for your project.
Texture matching as part of a repair is included in our repair pricing — it is not an add-on. Standalone re-texturing of a room typically starts in the mid hundreds as a rough starting range. Your free written estimate is the real number.
