The definition
Skim coating is a thin layer of joint compound (or plaster) troweled over an entire wall or ceiling surface — not just the seams. It levels everything: old texture, minor damage, bad previous finishing, all buried under one continuous smooth skin.
When skim coating is the answer
- Removing heavy texture. Going from knockdown or heavy orange peel to smooth? Skim coat first.
- Fixing bad mud work. Visible seams and crooked finishing across whole walls — skim over it rather than sanding forever.
- Refreshing old plaster. Tired but sound plaster becomes like-new.
- Level 5 finish. Skim coating is the difference between Level 4 and Level 5.
When it is not
Skim coating will not fix structural problems, will not stick to wet or crumbling surfaces, and is overkill for a single patched hole. It is a resurfacing technique, not a repair technique.
What it involves
Two to three thin coats, troweled on and sanded between, over the whole surface. It is skilled, physical work — and it is transformative. A skim-coated room looks like new construction.
