Drywall damage all looks like "a messed-up wall" until you know the types. Each one below has a photo, a cause, and an honest verdict: fix it yourself or call us. Photos are illustrative examples, not our job sites.
Nail pops
What you see: small round bumps pushing through the paint, sometimes in a line along a stud. Cause: the nail or screw behind the paint worked loose as the wood framing dried and shifted. Very common, not structural. Verdict: DIY-friendly — see our small fixes guide.
Hairline cracks
What you see: a thin crack, usually where wall meets ceiling or above doors and windows. Cause: normal house settling and seasonal movement. Verdict: one crack that stays put is cosmetic — patch and paint. Cracks that keep coming back, grow wider than a credit card edge, or run in stair-steps need a pro to look at what is moving.
Water stains
What you see: brownish-yellow rings or spreading blotches on ceilings or walls. Cause: water got in — roof leak, plumbing leak, or condensation. The stain is the symptom, not the disease. Verdict: call us. Painting over a stain without fixing the leak and the damaged board just schedules a bigger repair later. See water damage drywall repair.
Bubbling or peeling tape
What you see: the seam tape lifting, bubbling, or peeling away along a joint. Cause: moisture behind the tape, or tape that was never bedded in mud properly. Verdict: a pro fix. Re-taping means cutting out the bad section, re-bedding tape, and feathering mud wide enough to disappear. Small area, but fussy work.
Small holes
What you see: doorknob holes, anchor holes, dings from moving furniture. Cause: life happening. Verdict: DIY-friendly up to about fist size — our small fixes guide walks through it.
Large holes
What you see: damage bigger than your fist — accidents, removed fixtures, or opened-up walls. Cause: impact or deliberate removal. Verdict: call us. Big patches need backing, proper taping, and wide feathering to vanish. A bad big patch is visible forever.
Damaged corner bead
What you see: a crushed or dented outside corner, paint cracked along the edge. Cause: impacts — vacuum cleaners, toys, furniture. Verdict: call us. Corner bead has to come off and be replaced straight, or the corner will never look right.
